1) WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE A CAREER IN FASHION AS A CELEBRITY STYLIST?
“I always leaned towards fashion ever since I was young, so I studied fashion styling and it got me here.”
2) WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BREAK THROUGH AS A CELEBRITY STYLIST AND HOW DIFFICULT WAS IT IN THE BEGINNING?
“It definitely takes a lot of hard work. As stylists you work from 8am to 9 pm, so you have to be ready to put in the hard work and it gets you where you need to get. ”
3) WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO EMERGING STYLISTS TRYING TO MAKE IT IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
“I think assisting and interning is very important. What you learn on the floor, you don’t learn through books and classes. Hands on experience are very vital so you need to assist and intern. ”
4) WHAT IS THE ONE STYLING TRICK/HACK YOU LEARNT AFTER WORKING IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
“Not to panic when something goes wrong. If you panic, the celebrity panics and the situation becomes panicky. So I’ve learned not to panic in tricky situations.”
5) WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU HAD TO UNLEARN IN FASHION AFTER WORKING AS A CELEBRITY STYLIST?
“Finishing! When you look at garments you tend to look at their finishing but when you do stage and film costumes you see the fabric, it’s terrible and you would never wear them. That is one thing I had to unlearn that you don’t always have to use really superior fabric for these costumes.”
6) WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT YOUR JOB?
“People think it’s a glamorous job. One thing you must invest in if you’re a stylist, is a pair of sneakers because you will be on your feet morning to evening. ”
7) WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE STYLING MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER?
“It was one of the looks I did for Kriti Sanon for IIFA. I think she was a total head turner. It was one of the best looks I did on her and she was standing out in that room. ”
8) ARE THE LOOKS YOU STYLE INSPIRED BY YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
“Yes, my take on fashion is more edgy. It’s not very girly so I like to do cooler looks more than pretty looks.”
9) ARE STYLISTS THE NEW TRENDSETTERS AS THEY PUT TOGETHER LOOKS FOR SOME OF THE MOST PHOTOGRAPHED CELEBRITIES?
“Definitely! Fashion is so celebrity driven. Everyone wants to wear the clothes the actors are wearing and since stylists are the ones behind those looks, they play a very important role.”
10) HOW MUCH HAS CELEBRITY STYLING CHANGED FROM THE TIME YOU STARTED YOUR CAREER?
“Earlier people were only styling films and ads but now personal styling is the new wave in the industry where everyone needs a personal stylist. Nobody can turn up to an event in their own clothes, so that’s a major change. Another newest trend is that everyone is taking pretty pictures in those outfits which is a very good move.”
11) A TREND YOU’RE LOVING AND A TREND YOU HATE RIGHT NOW?
“I love the whole neo-hippy, modernism look that’s been going on. Full neutrals and knit fabrics, fluid silhouettes, shell jewellery – I love that. What I hate is wonky couture, lots of tulle, everything big – that’s not my style. ”
12) WHILE CURATING A RED CARPET LOOK WITH A DESIGNER FOR A CELEBRITY, HOW MUCH OF IT IS THE STYLIST’S INPUT?
“When you get something from a designer, everyone likes to wear something that suits their personality. That’s where a stylist plays the catalyst between the designer and the celebrity for something to come out perfectly because you understand their body type and you pick out the best piece from the designer’s collection.”
