In an exclusive interview, Ghavri talks about bridal styling and how to curate the perfect wedding trousseau for the modern Indian Bride.
1) WHAT ARE SOME MAJOR BRIDAL TRENDS FOR 2019? WHAT COLOURS SHOULD BRIDES TRY THIS SEASON?
“I think the major bridal trend for 2019 if we start with colour, the brides of today, are modern brides who are not restricting themselves with hues of red, they are exploring a lot of beautiful pastels, whether it is baby pink or mint green. Even the girls from Bollywood who got married recently, like Anushka Sharma or Neha Dhupia, they wore pastel pinks, so beautiful pastel shades are in. Secondly, blouses that feel like second skin, delicately embroidered blouses that feel like second skin, is definitely a trend that’s going to be explored more. Like how we say, there’s a dupatta 2.0 now, wearing a dupatta in a different way, whether there’s a tassel or feathers and ruffles, or dupattas that are pre-attached or draped, are some of the bridal trends that will be major.”
2) HOW DO YOU MODERNISE A BRIDAL LOOK WITH THE WAY YOU STYLE IT?
“I think if you want to modernize your bridal look, if you ask me as a stylist, I’d say, hair and makeup play a huge role, of course, how you drape a dupatta also plays an important part, you don’t have to go for a traditional trade, you can try different ways, whether you attach it as a cape, drape it differently as opposed to just wearing it on one side, I think that can really make or break the look. Also, jewellery, we often go for safe traditional pieces, we can experiment by layering it, doing interesting kinds of hair, using hair accessories, or not overdoing the makeup, keeping the makeup really beautiful and angelic can make a look really modern. I think by not going with traditional norms a look can be modernized.”
3) WHAT ARE SOME CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY TRENDS AND BRANDS THAT YOU LOVE?
“Jewellery trends that are currently trending are beautiful chokers, it doesn’t have to be a very very traditional chocker, it all depends on the bride, if you want to go traditional, you can layer a choker, with long neck pieces. I love the idea of statement pieces, I remember Sonam Kapoor doing it on her wedding day, she wore a bejewelled headpiece, it was really beautiful, as it had pearls and it will all over which made it very modern, so that is something you can definitely do. There are different brands for different kinds of jewellery like Birdichand does it very differently, another jewellery brand is Raniwala, there’s Sunita Shekhawat, these are designers who do exquisite but also customized pieces, according to your colours. A big tip for the birded would he to do their jewellery before their clothes, and do their clothes according to their jewellery.”
4) A LOT OF PEOPLE INCORPORATE FLOWERS IN THEIR LOOK. HOW DO YOU GET RIGHT?
“So I think having floral jewellery has become a big thing for brides to wear on theirs mehendi, my sister did it, but instead if going for the traditional floral headbands you can make it a little interesting by colour coordinating it with your outfits and by making some interesting wrist bands and haath-phools. If you don’t want to go for a floral crown, you can add little flowers and pearls to your hairstyle that day, make it very dainty and pretty so that’s definitely a way to go if you want to add flowers to your hair. Of course, if you’re a traditional bride, I love the idea of adding gajras to your hair, it’s lovely and adds a beautiful touch. You can always mix a little jewellery with flowers and make it look interesting and modern, depending on your outfit.”
