Q) How old were you when you realised fashion would be the industry you’d like to work in? Was it always your dream to work in fashion?

Philippe Uter (PU): I saw on TV a fashion show of YSL when I was 4 years old and asked my grandmother what it was. I was fascinated and to this day I have a passion for fashion.

Q) What attracted you to the creative side of the fashion industry?

PU: The diversity and the constant emergence of new emotions with each passing season have been truly captivating. Every season brings its own unique vibe and set of feelings, making the experience dynamic and ever-changing.

Q) How did you begin working as a stylist? What was your first breakthrough moment?

PU: When I decided that I didn’t want to be a designer, I went to editorials and creative direction. But as a celebrity stylist, my breakthrough was with a French actress named Ludivine Sagnier. She always ended up in the “Best dressed” lists and I had so much fun that I decided to continue this road all the way to Hollywood.

Q) Growing up, did you ever think you would end up working with the bigwigs of the industry?

PU: I always knew something big would come to me. I have always been attracted to the bigger picture, but I never thought I would be living this life and certainly not in Los Angeles.

Q) Could you describe your styling aesthetics?

PU: I always tend to stay chic and elevated with a twist of fashion and modernity. Sometimes sexy, sometimes eccentric but always striking the perfect balance.

Q) What does your usual workday look like?

PU: It literally depends on the client or the project. But usually starts with all my emails. Pull requests and selections online, then I take my car and visit showrooms and meet with designers to create and check for new looks to propose to my clients.

Q) How do you decide what kind of look works for each of your individual clients?

PU: It’s an alchemy of my personal taste, what is appropriate for the event, and how my client feels in the dress. Ensuring she feels comfortable and beautiful is the most important thing.

Q) Does your clothing choice for clients end up inspiring your personal style? Or vice-versa?

PU: It doesn’t inspire my personal look but it definitely has an impact. In the sense that I work so much that when it comes to styling myself, I get lazy and want to wear the same things always. (laughs)

Q) What has been your personal experience as one of the crucial navigators of the fashion industry as a stylist?

PU: My experience as a stylist in the fashion industry has been both challenging and rewarding. I’ve learned to balance my creative vision with the unique needs of my clients, ensuring they feel comfortable and stunning in their attire. Styling for diverse events has deepened my understanding of fashion’s impact on personal identity and confidence. Staying updated with trends while maintaining a timeless elegance is key. The most fulfilling part is seeing my clients’ transformation and joy when they wear something that truly represents them. This drives my passion and underscores the importance of my role in fashion.

Q) Do you have an absolute favourite styling project or look in your career so far?

PU: I do have a lot of beautiful memories, from working on the consulting team for Elie Saab to styling Milla Jovovich for the Cannes Film Festival or even Noah Schnapp for the promotions of Stranger Things. So many and all different but equally exceptional.

Q) What was the most significant fashion challenge you have ever had to face while styling?

PU: Working with kids and teenagers is always enjoyable yet challenging. Sizing is the initial hurdle, followed by the need to strike the right balance between comfort and fashion. It’s important to remember they are still kids, so you can’t push the boundaries too much.

Q) Who do you look up to when it comes to styling?

PU: When it comes to styling, I look up to several fashion icons and industry leaders who have consistently inspired me. Designers such as Alexander McQueen and John Galliano, Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, etc. influence my work with their timeless elegance and boundary-pushing creativity. Additionally, timeless actresses like Grace Kelly and Liz Taylor serve as style inspirations, embodying classic sophistication and grace. Their ability to blend art with fashion and create unforgettable looks serves as a constant source of inspiration for me.

Q) What are some of the things that nobody talks about being a fashion stylist?

PU: How hard it is! No one understands the hustle and the work behind a look. It is hours and days of work for only one look. It seems super easy but there is a difference between getting dressed and dressing someone.

Q) One celebrity with the most iconic wardrobe.

PU: I will say Gwyneth Paltrow. I always love the chic, effortless yet rock ‘n’ roll.

Q) What is your ultimate goal as a stylist?

PU: I recently launched my own brand named UTER and I wish this to grow more and develop more projects and partnerships with it.

Q) What are your future plans?

PU: Same as above.

Q) Describe yourself in one word when you’re not a stylist.

PU: Funny.

Q) What passion do you harbour apart from fashion styling and image consulting?

PU: I paint, but I also love museums, architecture, interior design and surfing along with horseback riding.

Q) What are some of your favourite tech tools?

PU: I must say Instagram. You can find anything on it. And when it comes to creating a mood board, I love Pinterest.

Q) 3 wardrobe must-haves according to you.

PU: Whether it is for a man or a woman–a good fit denim pants, a white T-shirt and a nice blazer black or navy blue.

Q) How do you unwind?

PU: I love to go out with my friends and have some wine. Otherwise, every time I can, I escape LA and go to Palm Springs, which is my sanctuary.

Q) A book that has impacted you immensely?

PU: Dangerous liaison. I love the story and all the dramas behind it. And for my personal health, The Power of Now was an incredible help for me.

Q) Your favourite genre of movies?

PU: I love drama and romance. I love to cry while watching a movie. I am a desperately romantic person. I also love a good scary movie.
