I had dreamt of my Choora ceremony moment ever since I started seeing myself as a bride, as it marks the beginning of me being one. On the day of the ceremony, my Mamaji’s pulled out a scarlet velvet box which revealed the most beautiful Rajasthani Choora I had ever seen. One by one, my sisters helped me put the bangles on. The first bangle went on smoothly but the second bangle kept getting stuck and wouldn’t budge. I folded my hands tighter and tighter, trying to squeeze the bangles through but they wouldn’t move. The sharp edges of the bangle began tugging and cutting at my skin. My heart dropping at this sight. Then out of nowhere, my sister grabbed her Chapstick from her purse and started applying it to the inner edges of the bangles, coating them completely with the waxy texture. I held my breath as she gently slid them on. One by one, the bangles clattered against each other and all I remember is smiling from ear to ear at the end! A stick of Chapstick saved my D-Day.
